I recently shot a newborn session at my studio and the family requested to keep the photos very simple and clean…no hats, headbands, props, etc. It is nice to shoot this way from time to time because it allows you to focus more on the baby with less time spent trying to change outfits, rearrange the baby, etc.
Here are some of my favorite shots from our simplicity session:
When doing a newborn shoot, my number one goal from the moment the baby enters my studio is to get him/her to sleep for as much of the session time as possible. That is one of the major reasons that I prefer to do newborn shoots within the first 3-10 days after the baby is born because at that point, the baby is still very sleepy and easy to shift into all of those cute, curled up positions. I explain all of this to my clients before our session and I usually make lots of suggestions as to how to best accomplish this goal. I have all kinds of tricks that I use to get those little ones to snooze their session time away, but sometimes….every so often….a newborn just doesn’t want to sleep. When this happens, my clients will almost always ask me, “what if the baby doesn’t sleep? Will we be able to get any good photos?”
The answer is ABSOLUTELY!! However, it will not be as easy. There may be less outfit changes or creative positions, but there will still be plenty of variety and often my clients will be amazed by just how many great shots we captured despite the baby being so wiggly, fussy, etc. This session was a perfect example of this type of situation. But I find that with patience, good timing ,and a couple of top secret newborn photographer tricks, you can still have a great newborn session with beautiful photos that will make you forget all about how much your little munchkin resisted sleep that day. Here are a few samples from a recent session with the sweetest little (wide awake) cutie ever. Not only is she adorable, but she is also super smiley as well:-)
I recently had a newborn shoot with a very handsome baby boy who is following in his daddy’s footsteps already with some very adorable fireman gear. He also looks EXACTLY like his dad too!! Here are a few of my favorite shots from our session:
A couple of weeks ago, I had a really fun newborn session at my studio with yet another easy going, beautiful baby girl. Her parents brought some great items along with them to personalize the session….my favorites of which were the sports items. Having a daughter myself who LOVES sports and likes to play softball, I really enjoy the idea of encouraging a love of sports in your daughters. So it was really fun for me to shoot photos that were both feminine and sporty! Here are a few of my favorites from our session:
A couple of weeks ago, I went to a new client’s home to photograph their gorgeous newborn baby girl. She was a very sleepy little munchkin, so I was able to get lot great shots without even having to take any breaks:-) Here are a few of my favorites from our session:
You may remember this family from last month when they had their maternity/family session posted on my blog. You can check out that post here. They were back a couple of weeks ago for their newborn shoot with the brand new baby….here are a few of my favorite shots from our session:
Big sister was filling in during feeding breaks with some of her energetic dance moves and giggles. Love this photo!Every single time I look at this next photo, it makes me yawn too:-)
Just wanted to post a quick sneak peak of my latest newborn session shot in my studio. I have made a little more progress in there and have built my reflector wall, hung my curtains on actual rods as opposed to thumbtacking them up, and am in the process of building up my collection of blankets, baskets, backdrops, etc. This is a slow process, but one that I am really excited to be doing. I have lots of exciting ideas for how to use this new space, so definitely stay tuned for more information coming soon. If you have an almost one year old, you will definitely want to continue to check back to see when I start officially offering cake smash sessions:-) I cannot wait for that!
In the meantime, here is some extra adorable newborn sweetness from the little man who came to visit me last week for his very first photo shoot. Here are a few of my favorites:
